In this quick tutorial I’m explaining what the ‘Resonance’ control on a filter does.
It actually boosts the frequencies around the cutoff frequency, so this enhances the filtersweep when sweeping the cutoff-frequency through the frequency spectrum.

A filter removes frequencies (harmonics) from the incoming audio signal, above the cutoff frequency (low pass) or below the cutoff (high pass). Resonance is an additional controlled amplification of that cutoff frequency, creating a secondary peak forms and colors the original pitch.
Resonant filters sort of works like your parametric EQ on your mixing desk or DAW. So basically at the cut off point you can increase the resonance or Q factor to accentuate frequencies.

Pushing it above a certain point can make the filter “Self-Oscillate” basically giving you a sine wave out of a filter.

Resonance is what gives synth sounds a sort of futuristic or alien tonal coloration.

Non-resonant filters simply don’t have the ability to amplify the cutoff frequency, so they only remove harmonics.
